Rincón de La Vieja National Park

This park is located 27 km (16.7 mi.) northeast of Liberia. It is aproximately 14.083.9 ha. and its average temperature is 26ºC (79º F). This park protects various river basins, here is born the Colorado river among other. It's main attractions are the Rincón de la Vieja volcanoand the hot springs that surround it. At this moment the volcano's only activity is through its fumaroles. The fauna at the park consists of different species of birds, guatusas (large rodents), ant eaters, mokeys like the congos and white faced as well as two-toed sloths. The park is closed on Monday.

Santa Rosa National Park

This park is located 36km (22.4 mi.) from downtown Liberia. It's area is 37.117 land ha. and 78.000 ha. underwater. This is a historic park, the battle of the "Casona de Santa Rosa" occured here on March 20, 1856. In this battle the Costa Rican defeated the American filibusters that attempted to invated the country. In addition, this park preserves the most important dry forest area in Central America. The park's beaches, Nancite and Naranjo, are host to the spawning of large marine turtles like the green turtle and the leatherback. The park is open from 8:00am a 4:00pm.

Palo Verde Conservation Area

The Palo Verde National Park is located in the lower basin of the Tempisque river. and extends over 19,800 ha. The park has a large area of swamps and limestomne hills that make this one of the most diverse habitat matrix. The habitats of the park host over 75 species of mammals and 700 types of plants, including over 100 aquatic plants. The banks of the Tempisque and Bebedero rivers host one of the largest populations of crocodiles.
