Sustainability

To be aware of the impact that our industry causes in the environment is a MUST for Cañón de La Vieja Lodge. The main reason to get this information, is to apply different process, mechanisms, products and behaviors that allows us to protect it. Among the strategies we have adopted, we recently added to our team a new member: Miss Helen Soto. She is the person in charge of all environment and social related programs the hotel is implementing. Some of those programs are the following:

• Waste separation and recycling: The project involves the hotel and a school nearby. Together with our guests, we have started to separate all recyclable materials. They are taken to a center where a group of women process them and sell it.
• Eco- friendly products usage:  In order to have a less negative impact in the environment we have avoid the use of chemicals in cleaning, laundry and some other areas that are usually highly contaminants.
• Sponsoring and assisting Curubande´s School to obtain “Bandera Azul Ecológica”: This reward is given to schools that provide a suitable place for teaching. Besides that, it takes into account their efforts not only in educate their kids in the regular subjects given by the government, but also to teach children to take care of the environment and society.
• Educational programs: Together with Universidad de Costa Rica and two other hotels, we are starting a project to provide educational programs for kids in 5 different schools. The programs are based in the correct use and importance of natural resources as water, earth and energy among others. The closure of the project will be on June 5th, 2010: World Environment Day.
• First  aid training: society and employees are also taken into account. Right now, 14 people are being trained in first aid response in order to help our guests and anybody else that may need assistance at any time.

These are our beginning projects, but we will be giving you news about all our accomplishments in this matter.
